Job Description
A high energy and outcomes focused consulting firm is bolstering their data engineering capability with a hands-on technical lead to drive platform delivery on a significant government sector engagement. You'll spend your time between the keyboard and the whiteboard: designing production data pipelines, mentoring 2–3 junior engineers, and leading technical direction for client deliverables across the Azure, Databricks, and Snowflake stack.
Day to day, you'll be designing and owning production data pipelines and platform components across Azure, Databricks and Snowflake, doing hands-on engineering rather than just oversight, while leading the technical direction for client engagements. That means making the calls on architecture, modelling approach and tooling trade-offs, and documenting them clearly enough that clients can run the platform without us. You'll set and enforce our engineering standards around testing, CI/CD, security and maintainability, and mentor a team of two or three engineers by reviewing their designs and code and lifting the bar for what we ship. Alongside the technical work, you'll scope engagements with clients, manage delivery plans, translate business problems into technical solutions, and support business development through discovery, estimation and proposals.
You'll likely have eight to ten years of hands-on data engineering behind you, with a track record of shipping production platforms rather than stalled migrations or prototypes. We're looking for deep expertise across Azure, Databricks and Snowflake.
Just as important is the way you work. You're someone who can lead delivery and people while staying hands-on, communicate clearly with non-technical stakeholders, and thrive in a consulting environment with shifting context, multiple clients and direct client contact. Australian citizenship is preferred, but no security clearance is required. Azure Data Engineer or Databricks certifications, streaming and real-time data experience, AI/ML enablement, or a consulting background would all be welcome bonuses.
A hybrid setup, with one or two days a week in the office or on client site and the rest from home, paid professional certifications and a real opportunity to shape the engineering culture from within.
While the contract is initially a 6-month fixed term, there's genuine potential to convert to permanent if the engagement extends (the wider pipeline is strong too).
If you've shipped platforms on this stack and want to lead a team without dropping the code, apply or get in touch ronny@theonset.com.au or 0448 808 848.
