Job Description

A submarine navigating the ocean depths.

An autonomous drone operating in a GPS-denied environment.

A mining operation detecting anomalies deep underground.

These are environments where traditional sensors fail, and where magnetic-field-aware systems can make all the difference.

But precision magnetometry isn’t easy. It requires navigating the edge of what’s physically possible.

That’s where this company comes in.

They’re building a first-of-its-kind diamond-on-chip quantum magnetometer - compact, field-ready, and engineered for real-world autonomy, defence, and exploration use cases.

Now, they’re looking for a Test and Measurement Engineer to take this cutting-edge sensing platform out of the lab and into the world.

Your Role in This Mission

  • Owning the characterisation and performance validation of the sensor stack from lab-based setups to field trials.

  • Designing experimental protocols, setting up test environments, and running pilot studies across complex signal environments.

  • Bridging the gap between R&D and product, translating experimental setups into robust, scalable test systems.

  • Collaborating across hardware, photonics, physics, and embedded systems to integrate and optimise performance.

  • Acting as delivery lead for critical external R&D partnerships, ensuring milestones are met and customer expectations exceeded.

Why now?

This is an opportunity to join early, with significant ownership over how the company tests, validates, and scales its core product.

You’ll be laying the groundwork for all future sensor generations-building out test infrastructure, defining protocols, and shaping quality assurance practices from day one.

This role will have high visibility and impact across both internal teams and external stakeholders, including key government and commercial partners.

Who you are

You’re not just a test engineer, you’re a systems thinker who knows how to push hardware to its limits, and make it repeatable.

  • You’ve designed test setups, run characterisation campaigns, and analysed performance across sensing technologies.

  • You understand the interplay between signal, noise, materials, and environment-and how to optimise for all four.

  • You’ve worked across some combination of photonics, magnetometry, CMOS/FPGA, or embedded systems.

  • You’re just as comfortable in a hands-on lab environment as you are managing project delivery and reporting to stakeholders.

  • You bring structure and clarity to complex engineering problems - and know how to communicate results clearly to both technical and non-technical teams.

This isn’t maintenance work. It’s not incremental.

It’s a rare chance to help define and deliver a foundational sensing technology - with the potential to reshape how we navigate, explore, and understand environments that were previously inaccessible.

Essential: Australian Citizenship (this role supports ADF-aligned programs).
