Job Description

Principal Site Reliability Engineer

$170,000 - $200,000 + super + $25-30,000 (15%) bonus

Sydney CBD, hybrid (2 days WFH)

Fed up with being treated like a ticket monkey? You might be lacking in advocacy for SRE from your leadership team.

You started with the best intentions, but if SRE is merely seen as sysadmin and observability, your patience is probably wearing thin.

How would things be different if you worked for someone who's considered a thought leader in the SRE space?

Someone whose background is real Google SRE work. Someone who will go to bat with and for you on all things resilience, reliability and velocity.

With the backing of good leadership like this, you get to move the dial with real project work and your career.

We're looking for a Principal Engineer to do exactly that for payment systems at one of the big four banks.

From a tech perspective, the landscape is over 1,000 services running across AWS and GCP (predominantly GCP) and utilising many of the cloud native technologies. It is a relatively new tech stack following event-driven architecture and a platform operating model.

You’ll utilise modern solutions like Dynatrace, Sum Logic and Bitbucket pipelines and build additional tooling around these core capabilities.

From a user perspective, they’ always-on (24x7x365) bank striving for no planned outages, and SLO targets of 99.99.  We have approx. 2 million clients, and with a traffic volume peak of approx. 1000 TPS for the front ends.

What you’ll be doing

This is your chance to shape the direction of SRE with advocacy from a real thought-leader.

Heading up the Enablement Function, you’ll evangelise best practices to the 30(ish) Platforms. And where necessary, create dedicated function teams in those platforms.

They’re investing in this, and in turn, investing in you.

In the the short-med term, you’ll have the opportunity to become a manager of a small team and then longer term manage the whole of the SRE function (currently 25 and growing).

By that point, you’ll be earning north of $300k.

The building blocks are there, they’ve got a culture receptive to change and the buy-in from leadership to make things happen.

What you’ll need

It’s a corporate environment, so you’re going to need to be comfortable navigating the politics that come with influencing technical strategy amongst technical leadership.

You’re likely a Principal or Staff level SRE already so we imagine you’ve already driven SRE adoption in environments where there is significant scale, risk and complexity.

We want to hear about where you’ve pioneered incident management. Evangelized SRE principles through workshops or documentation. Implemented SLO’s and SLI’s or eliminated TOIL through automation.

If that sounds like you and you’d like to learn more, you can contact Julien Bicknell at The Onset.

You can email me, Julien@theonset.com.au or call if you prefer, 0406 158 832.

Every application will receive a response.
