Job Description
Senior Machine Design Engineer, Custom Production Equipment
Sydney | Full time | Hybrid | $110k to $150k + 12% super + equity
Relocation and visa support available for the right person
The Mission
Some engineers design parts.
Some engineers deliver machines.
This role is for the second type.
You’ll take ownership of custom production equipment from requirements capture through design, build, FAT, SAT, commissioning, handover and stable operation.
The machines are high-precision, multidisciplinary and built for semiconductor manufacturing. Mechanical structure, pneumatics, electrical systems, controls, safety, vision, motion and operator reality all matter.
What You’ll Work On
• Own the full machine lifecycle from concept to stable production
• Capture requirements and turn them into a machine design specification
• Lead mechanical structure, electrical/pneumatic systems, controls architecture and safety systems
• Specify motion systems, sensors, actuators, frames, enclosures, PLCs, HMIs and vision systems
• Produce complete documentation packages across drawings, schematics, BOMs and manuals
• Coordinate internal fabrication, vendors, build, system integration and commissioning
• Walk machines through FAT, SAT and production handover
• Work with production, process and quality teams on throughput, yield and uptime
• Implement safeguards, risk assessments and machine safety requirements
• Support post-deployment iteration and knowledge transfer to operations and maintenance teams
What Matters Here
• 8+ years designing and delivering custom manufacturing or automation equipment
• Strong mechanical design across structures, mechanisms, pneumatics and tolerancing
• 3D CAD experience, such as SolidWorks, Inventor, CATIA or Fusion 360
• Electrical and controls integration experience
• Panel design, motor/drive selection and PLC/HMI fluency, or close collaboration with controls engineers
• Direct commissioning and production handover experience
• FAT, SAT and stable operation experience
• Machine safety standards such as ISO 13849, IEC 62061 or AS 4024
• Cross-disciplinary confidence across mechanical, electrical, controls, production and quality
Nice to Have
• PCB-related equipment experience, including handlers, testers, dispensers, pick-and-place or laser systems
• EPLAN or AutoCAD Electrical
• Beckhoff TwinCAT, Siemens TIA Portal or Allen-Bradley
• Cognex, Keyence or other vision systems
• SISTEMA or similar machine safety calculation tools
• SolidWorks PDM, Vault or other PDM/PLM tools
Why This Role Is Different
This is not a narrow design-office role.
It is blank page to production floor.
You’ll be the person who can see the whole machine, spot the trade-offs early and keep the build moving when mechanical, electrical, controls, safety and production all start pulling in different directions.
