Job Description
Senior / Principal Product Manager: API Infrastructure & Developer Ecosystem
Location: Christchurch or Auckland, New Zealand (relocation support and visa sponsorship provided)
The Opportunity
This is a rare kind of product role. You won't be optimising a funnel or managing a backlog someone else built. You will own the full API infrastructure and developer ecosystem for a company building the missing data layer for one of the world's largest industries. We're looking for one exceptional Product Manager to take end to end ownership of the APIs, integrations, developer portal, and partner ecosystem that power the platform. You will set the strategy, define the architecture direction alongside engineering, build the developer experience from the ground up, and be accountable for commercial outcomes: adoption, retention, and revenue from our API program.
This is one of four inaugural PM hires (this is the last one left to hire for now). The people we bring in now will shape not just their product, but how they build product as a company.
About the Company
Our client is a venture backed technology company building critical infrastructure for a global industry that still runs on phone calls and PDFs. Their investors include some of the world's most recognised venture capital firms and the personal backing of co-founders behind companies you use every day. They have tripled in size over the last year and are funded to grow aggressively.
They operate from New Zealand as well as having a growing presence in the US and Europe. They're building a world-class team, Silicon Valley ambition but with a New Zealand lifestyle. Visa sponsorship (including families) and full relocation support are available for the right person wherever they are in the world.
What You'll Own
- The external API program: design, versioning, governance, and commercial model
- Developer portal and documentation: the experience that onboards and retains third- arty developers
- Partner and integration ecosystem: onboarding new data partners and enabling programmatic access across our network
- The evolution of the APIs toward agentic and autonomous consumption patterns
- Internal platform APIs: working closely with engineering to ensure the architecture supports both current and future product surfaces
- Metrics that matter: API adoption, developer activation, integration health, and revenue contribution from the ecosystem
Who You Are
You have shipped API products that developers have actually used at scale. You understand what good developer experience looks like, and you have the receipts. You are technical enough to earn the respect of a senior engineering team, but you are a product thinker first: you care about outcomes, not outputs.
You have probably:
- Built or scaled an API platform, developer ecosystem, or integration program at a company with high technical standards
- Worked directly with external developers and understood what drives adoption, trust, and retention in a developer-facing product
- Shipped a developer portal, SDK, or documentation strategy, not just written a spec for one
- Made architectural decisions alongside engineers, not just accepted them
- Owned commercial outcomes tied to your API program: usage growth, partner revenue, or ecosystem expansion
You are drawn to hard, undefined problems. You are not looking for a company with a well-worn product playbook. You want to write the playbook.
You should apply if:
- You have a track record of building developer facing infrastructure products that created measurable business outcomes
- You can prototype: you are comfortable in code, even if you are not an engineer by trade
- You have worked at a company where the technical and business ambitions were both genuinely high
- You want equity that actually means something
The Package
- $180,000-$220,000 NZD base salary
- Equity: 1.5 2.4x annual salary in share options with a $0.01 strike price, 1 year cliff, 4 year vest, no requirement to exercise on exit
- Full visa sponsorship including family members
- Relocation allowance
- Based in Christchurch (preferred) or Auckland, remote within New Zealand considered for the right candidate
