Job Description

Senior Embedded System Engineer

Sydney | Full-time | Hybrid | $130k-160k + super

The Scroll-stopper

Most senior embedded roles ask you to own firmware.

This one asks you to own the bit where hardware, software and product collide.

A rare opportunity for hands-on exposure to emerging technology; including edge AI accelerators and high-end sensor hardware.

The Org

A small, elite team in Sydney is building a modular wireless sensing platform that spans embedded devices, edge compute, cloud infrastructure and customer-facing applications. The hard part is not writing firmware in isolation. It is figuring out how new capabilities get added, how new sensors get integrated, and how the whole thing stays coherent as the product scales.

You’ll be an early member of a growing engineering team, at one of the Aussie ecosystem's most promising startups. A startup with fresh funding, international clients, and a unique product. A unique product built for a problem space vital to modern life.

You'll work closely to the CTO, and take ownership of the embedded layer across a platform that is already live, already useful, and ready to become much more capable.

The Mission

This is not a narrow firmware seat buried in a backlog.

You’ll sit in the layer between low-level device behaviour and real product capability.

One week you’re bringing up a new sensor.
The next you’re building the Linux-side application that makes its data usable.
Then you’re tracing why something broke three layers upstream.

Whatever your week looks like, your work will contribute to human safety and shield society from immense pressure.

What You’ll Work On

  • Build embedded capabilities across a modular wireless sensing platform
  • Write Python and C/C++ across Linux and bare-metal environments
  • Integrate new sensors from hardware interface through to system output
  • Build low-level Linux applications that move data through the stack
  • Support firmware, system integration and device-to-cloud data flow
  • Work across hardware, software and product to ship new capability fast

What Matters Here

  • Strong Python
  • Strong C/C++ in Linux
  • Working competence with bare-metal C
  • Comfortable in low-level Linux environments
  • Able to work across hardware, firmware and software layers
  • Comfortable reading schematics, bringing up boards and debugging real systems
  • Curious, self-directed and happy solving problems that do not arrive neatly labelled

Bonus points for

  • ESP-IDF
  • Wireless sensor systems
  • Debian (ideally Bookworm)
  • Raspberry Pi ecosystm (particularly Compute Modules)
  • AWS IoT Core or Greengrass
  • GStreamer, OpenCV or imaging pipelines

Why It’s Worth Your Time

This is not one of those embedded jobs where you inherit a driver stack and spend three years shaving milliseconds off the same problem.

It's broader.
It's higher impact.
It's more interesting the deeper you go.
